We are building our next generation of business development professionals, and are seeking recent graduates to begin an exciting career in our Business Development Program.  This is an ideal opportunity for candidates who want to utilize their technical skills to develop solutions and drive value for customers.  Individuals will be assigned to a business development team at PolyOne’s Specialty Engineered Materials (SEM) and location based on their interests and skills. 


 The program will include business unit specific training lasting approximately 3 to 6 months.  During this period, individuals will be exposed to customer service, plant operations, warehouse/logistics functions, travel within a regional territory and classroom training to gain a full overview of their assigned business unit.  Individuals will shadow experienced business development managers and territory sales representatives to learn our Value Based Selling program.  Upon completion of the training program, individuals will be responsible for securing business from prospective and current accounts to achieve annual sales and profit objectives.  It is expected that post-training, the position will require 25-50% travel. 



  • Identify unmet customer needs, develop material strategies and create specialty solutions to address them.
  • Implement marketing programs and work with customers on new application development.
  • Establish market-based development plans to track and close new business targets consistent with long term growth objectives.
  • Develop, execute and manage the business development cycle, sales to new business (STNB), and expense budgets.
  • After training period, position requires travel by car or plane up to 25%-50% of the time.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required; technical discipline (Material Science & Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or Chemical Engineering) preferred. Sales certification a plus.
  • Prior customer service or sales related experience preferred.
  • Technical aptitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated
  • Team Player
  • Strong computer skills: proficiency with MS Word & Excel preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
