R&D Scientist

Essential Functions

• Provides project management in product platform development including application of statistical experimental design, product testing, and data analysis.
• Presents technical work to customers and various levels of management.
• Develops experimental methods and protocols when none are available for solution of problems.
• Leads teams of coworkers to formulate strategies to resolve complex problems and contribute to the growth of the Glasforms business within Advanced Composites.
• Establishes priorities for multiple projects simultaneously and brings them to completion in a timely fashion.
• Trains others within the group to understand complex and/or new technologies and resin chemistry and its interaction with composite fabrication processes.
• Initiates projects to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
• Researches technical trends and provides unique and patentable solutions with markets and customers in mind.
• Collaborates with broader Avient technical community, utilizing tools available and contributing to broader Advanced Composites business, Specialty Engineered Materials division, and Corporate Technology efforts as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Polymer Science, or related discipline.
• 8+ years of relevant industry experience required.

Additional Qualifications

• Knowledge of fiber-reinforced composites and thermoset resin chemistries required.
• Knowledge of relevant thermal and mechanical test methods for composite materials required.
• Knowledge of and experience with thermoset composite fabrication processes preferred.
• Ability to develop statistical experimental designs and test plans for lab, pilot, and commercial scale trials required.
• Self-motivated team player capable of leading project teams and serving in contributing roles as needed.
• Ability to communicate technically complex subjects to audiences with different levels of technical understanding.
• Curious learner able to network and engage internal and external colleagues globally.
