Job Summary
The Sr. Environmental & Remediation Manager will manage, and coordinate activities related to Avient's environmental programs and performance including the oversight of the activities surrounding Avient’s environmental liabilities. This includes site remediation efforts, budgeting, managing of contractors, coordination with PRPs and interaction with various regulatory agencies.
Essential Functions
• Develop and execute strategies to address environmental liabilities at non-active Avient (and subsidiary) and third-party sites to ensure compliance with local and federal requirements.
• Technical experience in soil and groundwater investigation, remediation, and other key environmental management subjects.
• Communicate complex technical and regulatory challenges and related impacts to internal stakeholders including Finance, Legal and EHS.
• Manage the costs associated with site remediation, monitor liability accrual balances, and work with Finance/Legal on potential adjustment assessments.
• Develop strategies for site management to control costs and liability reduction by working with internal and external resources and key stakeholders.
• Negotiate with regulatory agencies and other parties to implement overall site strategy and tactics.
• Review draft reports and submittals prepared by consultants for submission to regulatory agencies.
• Participate in environmental education and research.
• Attend and participate in updates to the EHS department, Legal, Finance and Environmental Reserve team.
• Maintain regular contact with regulatory bodies for the respective sites.
• Maintain relationships with third-party property owners as needed due to access or other legal requirements.
• Work with the legal department to assess alleged third-party environmental liabilities.
• Travel as necessary, including site visits and meetings.
• Hire and manage consultants and contractors to support remediation work, including receipt and review/approval of invoices.
• Work with Legal on access agreement development, consultant/contractor agreements, and review of regulatory agency agreements.
• Work with Legal and outside insurance contractors to provide documentation on spending and address scope questions to assist with insurance recoveries.
• Partner with Legal on strategies regarding liabilities.
• Assist during mergers and acquisitions to assess potential liability exposure.
• Maintain an electronic document library of sampling/reporting information and agreements.
• Adhere to work practices to maintain document privilege and litigation document retention as directed by Legal.
• Understand corporate subsidiary structure and ensure liability's appropriate entity is properly identified in any reports and communications.
• Identify, assess and reduce organization's environmental risks and financial costs at ongoing operations, or formerly operated sites and/or third party sites impacted by operations.
• Keep abreast of environmental legislation and best practice.
• Writing environmental reports.
• Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (environmental, chemical or mechanical preferred) or geology (hydrogeology preferred)
• 10+ years’ experience in the manufacturing industry preferred
• 5+ years project management experience preferred
• Experience managing remediation sites subject to CERCLA.
• Knowledge of accounting guidance FAS5, Fin47, and SOP96 a plus
• Contractor management
• Consultant management
• Financial experience – project management, accrual management, cash forecasting, capital projects, budgeting.
Additional Qualifications
• Ability to navigate and operate at a high level in various computer systems – SAP, Excel, Coupa, MS Project, etc.
• Communication skills – ability to effectively communicate complex issues with the following groups of people
o Contractors, Consultants
o Government agencies
o Internal & external counsel
o Leadership team
o 3rd party auditors
o Finance
• Organization – Ability to maintain a detailed document library while maintaining document privilege and retention
