General Summary

The Sr. Technology Manager is responsible for leading a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to test, analyze and consult on custom polymer compounds.  This is accomplished by working closely with the technology teams across PolyOne.  Responsibilities include meeting customer requirements with respect to testing such as mechanical and electrical properties, flame resistance, and a broad array of polymer analytical testing.  This requires effective resource utilization and team management, as well as good cross-functional coordination. This role will also interact and influence all levels of the organization (PolyOne and Customer), including the VP/GM level.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities


As part of PolyOne’s Research & Development and Technology team, this position will lead or support the following initiatives:

  • Develop innovative solutions that position PolyOne as the leading specialty solutions provider for customers.

  • Partner internally and externally to innovate new technology and penetrate strategic markets to solve customer problems.

  • Manage innovation portfolios, technology plans and resources consistently with business unit priorities.

  • Effectively deploy idea generation and management, POL process, project management, design of experiments, DLFSS, and other technology tools.

  • Drive a culture of innovation through creativity, cooperation, collaboration, and engagement.

  • Achieve target vitality index metrics.

    This position will manage a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians within the scope given below:

  • Leadership
    • Define, approve, and guide R&D projects to drive formulation development of specialty polymer compounds.

    • Manage, maintain and add appropriate capital for expanded capability in line with strategy.

    • Provide technical leadership through mentoring, training, and coaching to balance short-term product customization and mid-term product development.

    • Interact globally to facilitate test translation with technical teams in Europe and Asia.

    • Effectively network with other technical and marketing teams within PolyOne to generate and exploit new ideas and opportunities.

    • Lead the team to support marketing & sales through development of product and application data, as well as support manufacturing to establish quality and testing conditions for new materials.

    • Advocate a strong safety and performance culture and attitude within the team.

    • Drive a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Testing services
    • Lead teams across a vast array of analytical methods including spectroscopy, chromatography, microscopy, rheology, fire science, weathering, inorganic analysis and additional physical testing methods.

    • Support product and process development, scale up and quality control issues through solid testing fundamentals.

    • Evaluation and characterization of both raw materials and finished goods.

    • Effectively communicate results and insights beyond just data.

    • Maintain and adhere to accreditations and general lab practices.

  • Consultative product development
    • Partner with business units to achieve goals through collaborative and consultative business practices leveraging analytical testing service.

    • Encourage and embed partnership with customers to provide solutions beyond mere testing data.

Education and Certifications

PhD-Polymer Engineering or equivalent experience.

Experience Requirements

15+ years of relevant experience with the ability to interact, present and influence cross functionally and globally, both internally and externally with customers, is required.
